Velma M. Freytag


Velma Marian Freytag passed away on February 1, 2017 in Napoleon, Ohio. Velma was born July 4, 1919 in Defiance County, Ohio, to parents Henry and Helen Norden. She married Edwin Freytag June 2, 1940 and lived on the family farm before moving to Napoleon. Velma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was employed for several years at the former Clevite-Harris Corporation in Napoleon. Velma and Edwin were faithful members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Napoleon Township.

Survivors include her sister Doris Avers of Woodville, Ohio, daughter, Dianne (John) LeGros of Troy, Ohio, and daughter, Betty (Edward) Riedinger of Bluffton, SC. Velma is also survived by 3 grandchildren: Eric (Cindie)Riedinger of Charlotte, NC, Britt (Jarrett) Maillet of Pooler, GA, and Darin (Ann) LeGros of Westerville, Ohio. She was also blessed with 8 great-grandchildren: Hailey, Joseph, William and Patrick Riedinger; Blake and Chloe Maillet; and Amanda and Mason LeGros. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin , sister, Delora Helmke, brother, Victor Norden, and granddaughters, Heather LeGros and Holly LeGros.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Genacross Lutheran Services both at Alpine Village and Napoleon Campus for their excellent care and kindness.

Visitation for Velma will be Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Walker-Hoening Mortuary (333 West Main Street) of Napoleon, Ohio, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 10, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Napoleon Township , with visitation preceding the service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery. Memorials in Velma's memory may be made to Filling Home of Mercy of Napoleon, Ohio or St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Napoleon Township.

I took care of Velma for many years at Alpine. She was always so thankful and gracious. A very beautiful woman. Wishing you peace and comfort.
