Obituary

 

Sharon Kathleen (Moriarty) Garand, age 74, of Perrysburg, died Tuesday afternoon August 29, 2017 at Kingston Rehabilitation of Perrysburg. She was born on her mother’s 35 birthday, February 2, 1943 in Toledo.  She was the youngest child and only daughter of Howard and Evelyn (Konst) Moriarty. Attending OLPH Catholic Church and School, Sharon graduated from St. Ursula Academy in 1961.  Five days after graduation she began classes at Stautzenberger Business College graduating in the fall of 1962.  She worked at the Toledo Better Business Bureau and as an executive secretary at Ohio Citizens Bank.

In 1963 she met John Garand at the TCCY (Toledo Council of Catholic Youth) summer bowling league. She and John were married on February 27, 1965.  In March of 1965 they moved to Nashville, Tennessee where John worked for the Federal Government.  After many years of caring for her family at home, in 1982 she went back to work at the Catholic Diocese of Toledo in the Communications Office also serving as receptionist for the Chancery on Parkwood Blvd.  Later she was appointed a Notary in the Tribunal of the Toledo Diocese.  In 1989 she left the Tribunal to spend time with her family and travel with John.  In the 1990’s Sharon worked with her sister-in-law as a travel agent at Custom Tour and Travel enjoying many trips with family and friends.  In 1997 she began working at the Wood County Board of Elections as an Elections Administrator retiring in 2009.

Outside of her family Sharon was active in the community singing with John, Richard, and Darlene in the Velvetone Choraliers in Oregon.  As the “Garand Garoup” they performed comedy sketches and sang together for many years.  She was active at her church serving on Parish Council at SS. Cyril and Methodius Church in Rossford and later on Pastoral Council at All Saints Catholic Church regularly working on the Parish Festivals.  Sharon also served the Diocese on the DPC (Diocesan Pastoral Council) and was a founding member of Parents of Priests of the Toledo Diocese. She was on the women’s CHRP (Christ Renews His Parish) team of All Saints and assisted as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.  Sharon is survived by her husband of 53 years John; and four children, Jennifer (Jeff) Crawford of Toledo, Rev. J. Douglas Garand of Napoleon, Julie (Tina Sperlik) Garand of Orlando, FL and Jill (Maurice) Holloway of Cincinnati; grandchildren, Jeffrey Crawford, Joshua Crawford, Justin (Carina) Crawford, Jacob Crawford, Jonathan Crawford, Maurice Holloway, Jameson Holloway, Makenna Holloway, Samantha Sperlik, and Sydney Sperlik; and great-grandchildren, Joslyn and Jazlyn Crawford.  She is also survived by her brothers, Thomas (Nancy) Moriarty and James (Toni) Moriarty both of Toledo; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Alice) Garand of Tucson, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Evelyn; brother, John; in-laws Fred and Mary Garand; brother-in-law, Fr. Fred Garand; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Darlene Garand; and her infant son, Joseph Frederick Garand on June 13, 1969; and five other children in pregnancy along with an infant grandson, James Crawford.

Visitation will be held at All Saints Catholic Church, 628 Lime City Road in Rossford on Sunday September 3, 2017 from 1:30 – 8 pm, where a Rosary will be prayed at 7 pm, led by Fr. Tony Recker.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated by her son, Rev. J. Douglas Garand at All Saints Catholic Church, Rossford on Monday September 4, 2017 at 11 am. Private family burial will take place Tuesday at St. Ignatius Parish Cemetery, Oregon.  Memorials are suggested to the All Saints Catholic Church Debt Reduction Fund.  We will remember her faith, gentle guiding presence, and faithfulness to family and friends. May the Angels lead her into paradise!
