Ruth Ann Whitta

Ruth Ann Whitta (n. Hattendorf), 87, of Fostoria, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, September 12, 2017, at Toledo Hospital, following a series of debilitating strokes.  She was born February 1, 1930, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, to the late Henry W. and Rosella K. (Ramm) Hattendorf.  She married James Charles Whitta on November 20, 1951, in Fostoria, who predeceased her on February 9, 2011.  She is survived by seven children, Thomas (Lori) Whitta, Fostoria, David (Denise) Whitta, Fostoria, Kathryn (Jon) Miller, Ottawa Hills, Mary (Kirk) Van Dagens, Bloomfield Hills, MI, James (Jon Harada) Whitta, Berkeley, CA, Susan (Michael) Zeiler, Grand Haven, MI, and Elizabeth (Ken Reinhart) Buhrow, Fostoria, thirteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, her brother, Richard Hattendorf, Raleigh, NC, and her brother-in-law, Richard Rook, Massillon.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Rook, and brother, William Hattendorf.

Ruth was a 1948 graduate of Fostoria High School.  She was co-founder and office manager of the family business, Whitta Construction Inc., managing the business while raising a large family.  She was an active parishioner of St. Wendelin Catholic Church in Fostoria and an honorary life member of the parish Circle of Mercy.  She was also a longtime member of Altrusa International.  A nurturing mother and grandmother and a heroic homemaker, Ruth fed and clothed her family with homegrown food and homemade clothes.  She was an adept bridge and domino player throughout her life, a bowler in a mixed doubles league, golfer, a square dancer, an avid reader, and a lover of music.  A woman of great character, kindness and compassion, Ruth had a friendly word and a warm smile for everyone at all times, and was much loved by her husband and children.  Her example of loving-kindness will live on in each of us.

Visitation will be Friday, September 15, 2017, from 4-8 p.m. at HOENING & SON FUNERAL HOME, 133 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, where a Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. led by the Circle of Mercy.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at St. Wendelin Catholic Church, with Rev. Although we did not know Ruth Ann very well, we saw her handiwork in the marvelous family she raised.
She was so very active but always put her family first.

Her family will have so many fond memories of her great life.

To the Whitta Family: Your parents were good neighbors to my parents and I remember many a Christmas that we visited with your parents around my mom and dad's kitchen table. It is tough to lose your mother but she is now in a place with no suffering. She had a good life and was blessed with many children and grandchildren.
