Norman Eugene DeTray
Norman Eugene DeTray, of Napoleon, Ohio, passed away surrounded by his loving children on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at his home.
Norm was born on January 14, 1925, in Napoleon, Ohio, to his parents Mabel Ellen (Kuder) and Ervin Marion DeTray.
Norm was a 1942 graduate of Napoleon High School. He attended Ohio State and graduated from Bowling Green State University. In 1943 he entered military service and became a proud Naval Aviator in World War II, flying a variety of aircraft from biplanes to his favorite, the Corsair fighter plane. In 1949, Norm married Marilyn Jean Gebhart of Napoleon. They remained together until Marilyn passed away in 1999.
Norm enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and was an avid golfer, tennis player, ham radio operator, and computer enthusiast. As a sports fan, he cheered for the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Detroit Tigers, and the Detroit Lions. He was a member of the local Elks Lodge and the American Legion. He retired from the Campbell Soup Company in 1989, where he worked in the planning department.
Norm is survived by his children, Jeffrey (Lynda) DeTray, Julie DeTray and Scott (Elaine) DeTray; grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa) DeTray and Jessica DeTray. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Riley and Rowan DeTray.
Norm was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marilyn, and siblings Donald E. DeTray and Helen I. Heckler.
Visitation for Norman DeTray will take place on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Walker-Hoening Mortuary (333 W. Main St.) of Napoleon, from 10 am to 12 pm. Services will immediately follow at 12 pm at Walker-Hoening Mortuary. Interment will take place at Glenwood Cemetery.
Memorial donations in Norm's memory may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) or to the American Cancer Society.
